My goal is to depict the grotesque as beautiful through functional ceramic ware. Octopi and other sea creatures are ugly and scary when they are beneath your feet in the ocean. However, on a recent trip to the aquarium I was able to view them closely enclosed in a glass tank. The fluidity in their limbs and tiny details of their suckers was not only surprising but also beautiful. Using the medium of clay, I strive to recreate what I saw that day: beauty in the grotesque. Clay allows me to mimic and repeat my interpretations of movement in octopi. The final product allows the viewer to see these organisms how I once did, as beautiful beings.
